UW-MADISON. Located on the university campus, this enterprise is affiliated with UW-Madison and serves as a practical learning experience for certain of its students. Ice creams and cheeses produced by the university are renowned for their flavor and quality, and you'll often see folks tackling a multi-scoop cone in absolute bliss. A number of recipes are standards (chocolate peanut butter, orange custard, chocolate chip), and monthly innovations also appear (tiramisu, cotton candy, rootbeer float). Make sure not to let this one slip by untested. And they're open year-round, so summer visitors won't miss out!

EAST. Should you find yourself craving fresh vegetables and lemongrass-scented dishes that recall Far Eastern culinary traditions, this intimate place is well-equipped to sate the desire. Madison's first Thai restaurant (and still its most popular by far), Bahn Thai is the city's best destination for Thai food aficionados. The menu features plenty of options, from tasty curries to a classic pad Thai that still draws raves, even after some 20 years.

EAST. Named for a prominent city on the island of Java, this Indonesian restaurant breathes life into Madison's dining scene. The family-run place, adorned with artwork and artifacts, promises a culinary adventure, thanks to its homemade dishes. Marinated chicken, grilled lamb, fried catfish, and tender shrimp pair with fresh herbs, vegetables, and seductive sauces in irresistible combinations. Bandung also hosts a "rijsttafel," the elaborate feast where rice is the backdrop for 10 meat- and vegetable-based accompaniments. The meal includes authentic music and dancing and requires advance booking. Reservations recommended, especially on weekends. 10-item rijsttafel $25.

WEST. Biaggi's serves patrons well with large portions, an extensive menu, and a comfortable, convivial ambience. Local folks prize favorites like osso buco, chicken saltimbocca, pork chops al forno, seared salmon, veal marsala, and an herb-tinged NY strip. Pastas and individual pizzas also make for appetizing fare, and the wine list features Italian and domestic vintages. Service is attentive, and children are easily accommodated, as are groups. A great, anytime restaurant.

DOWNTOWN. The flavor of just-caught seafood can't be beat, and Blue Marlin treats it with a light hand, often simply grilling fresh fish and coaxing out its delicacy with light sauces or a brush of aromatics. The menu changes depending on what's available, but you're likely to find blue marlin, tuna, salmon, Alaskan halibut, swordfish, or Chilean sea bass. Shellfish and items from the raw bar can also be had. Plus, soup and salad are included with meals, and wines are available as well.
